Virtual Labs

The Heinz Virtual Lab is a remote access service for software. The Virtual Lab is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from any location on or off campus.

How to Use the Virtual Lab

You can use either the local client installation, or you can use the HTML Access to log in to the virtual lab. The local installation requires you to install a client on your machine while the HTML access uses your browser to access the lab. The local installation can be more responsive than the HTML access, but either will work.

Heinz Virtual Lab for Windows

Step 1: Install VMware View

  1. Determine if your operating system is 32 or 64 bit.
  2. Download the appropriate VMware Horizon View Client.
  3. Double-click the downloaded file.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  5. Enter virtual.andrew.cmu.edu for Default Connection Server
  6. Check Show in Options menu in the Enhanced Single Sign On window.
  7. Restart when prompted.

Step 2: Connect to the Heinz Virtual Lab

  1. Open the VMware Client application.
  2. Double-click the virtual.andrew.cmu.edu connection.
  3. Log in with your Andrew user ID and password.
  4. Domain is Andrew.
  5. Double-click Heinz vLab.
  6. Log off via the Options menu.

iPad

Step 1: Install VMware View

  1. Open iTunes or the App Store on the iPad
  2. Search for and install the VMware View for iPad

Step 2: Connect to the Heinz Virtual Lab

  1. On your iPad, Open the VMware Horizon app.
  2. The VMware Horizon app opens. Click the Add Server button or click the + (plus) in the top left corner.
  3. In the Connection Server field, type: virtual.andrew.cmu.edu. Click Connect.
  4. You will see a warning about not saving data to the virtual computer. Click Done.
  5. The Login screen appears.
    Username: Your Andrew username
    Password: Your Andrew password
    Domain: Andrew
  6. The Available Desktops appear. Select the desktop you want to access. (See below for virtual lab desktop options.)
  7. The View application will open and connect you to your desktop.
