What can we help you find?

New Students

Heinz College / Current Students / Computing Services / New Students

Laptop Requirements Guidelines

All Heinz College students are required to have a laptop. Read our laptop requirement guidelines for more information. Mac users, please read the Mac OSX section in the guideline.

Documentation

For more information regarding Campus Printing services, see this page for details.

Virtual Lab

The Virtual Lab is a remote access service for software. You can access the Virtual Lab from any location on or off campus.

Software

We encourage all incoming students to ensure they have at least Windows 11 Pro (not Windows Home). Windows 10 will stop receiving support and free software security updates from Microsoft after October 14th, 2025. It will no longer be supported by Heinz Computing on this date. We can also help you once you arrive, however it will be easier to do it before you get here. We also encourage you to download and install the following applications before arriving on campus:

Cisco VPN
Microsoft Office 365

Laptop Support

Student owned laptops that meet the minimum hardware specifications have limited support for Windows 11 Professional/Education. Limited support includes:

  • Support connecting to the CMU network
  • Limited support for installation of core course programs like Oracle and Microsoft Office. Many applications require the operating system language be set to English
  • Diagnostic services for hardware problems
